Australia and India Expand Regional Vision A Partnership for the Future

Australia and India’s partnership has never been closer nor more consequential.
Delighted to be in Delhi to co-host the 16th Foreign Minister’s Framework Dialogue with my good friend Dr S. Jaishankar to discuss leveraging our partnership for the benefit of our countries and the region. We covered strategic tech, defence, trade, people-to-people ties, and our shared vision for a peaceful stable, stable and prosperous region. It was fantastic to visit Australia’s hardworking embassy and meet with experts and industry leading the way in cyber and tech.

Australia and India’s strategic partnership continues to strengthen, reaching what officials from both nations describe as its most significant and dynamic phase yet. This momentum was on full display in New Delhi, where the 16th Foreign Ministers’ Framework Dialogue was co-hosted by Australia’s Foreign Minister and her Indian counterpart, Dr. S. Jaishankar. The meeting underscored the growing weight of the relationship and its importance not only to both countries, but to the broader Indo-Pacific region. The dialogue focused on a wide spectrum of shared priorities, reflecting the increasingly comprehensive nature of the partnership. Strategic technologies and defense cooperation featured prominently, with both ministers emphasizing the need to bolster resilience, enhance interoperability, and support the development of emerging technologies that will shape the region’s security environment. Trade and economic ties were also central to the discussions, including opportunities to deepen supply-chain collaboration, increase investment, and expand market access in key industries.

Equally important were people-to-people links — one of the bedrocks of Australia–India relations. With thousands of students, professionals, and families moving between both nations each year, ministers highlighted the importance of mobility, skills partnerships, and fostering cultural understanding as engines of long-term cooperation. The meeting reaffirmed a shared commitment to a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Indo-Pacific a vision grounded in respect for sovereignty, open markets, and a rules-based regional order. Both ministers stressed that their cooperation is not solely bilateral but is intended to contribute to the security and wellbeing of the wider region.

During the visit, the Australian Foreign Minister also took time to meet staff at Australia’s embassy in New Delhi, engaging with experts and industry leaders driving advancements in cyber security and technology. Their work, she noted, reflects the innovation and dedication underpinning Australia’s broader strategic engagement with India.
